The discussion will consider the impact of the on-going wars in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon\, as well as the consequences of the collapse of the Assad regime.  Other topics will include Iran’s changing influence\, Turkey’s expanding role\, and diplomatic efforts to prevent the spread of conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon. This webinar will be a unique opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of how these complex dynamics are reshaping the Middle East’s geopolitical landscape and the implications for regional stability and security. \nMr. Jon Wilks CMG is a distinguished British diplomat with over three decades of experience in the UK Diplomatic Service. His career has been marked by significant roles in the Middle East and North Africa\, including ambassadorial positions in Qatar (2020-2023)\, Iraq (2017-2019)\, Oman (2014-2017)\, and Yemen (2010-2011) As a fluent Arabic speaker\, Wilks has also served as the UK Special Representative for Syria (2012-2014) and Regional Arabic Spokesman (2007-2009). Ambassador Wilks’ expertise extends beyond traditional diplomacy. He has navigated complex geopolitical challenges\, particularly in conflict zones\, and has been instrumental in fostering UK relations with various Arab nations. He is currently the Azman Hashim Fellow in International Relations at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies\, where his research interests focus on the Middle East and North African affairs\, conflict resolution\, stabilization\, and mediation.  He holds a MPhil in International Relations from St Antony’s College\, Oxford\, and a MA in Middle East Politics from Durham University \nHis research interests focus on RSVP HERE \nWeeknight Webinars are included in membership dues. DESCRIPTION:Join us October 24th for our third\, annual Fall Foreign Policy Forum: Global Stakes with Local Ties.\n\n\nWill foreign policy be a factor in this year’s election? Conventional wisdom says U.S. voters decide on domestic issues – like jobs and the economy\, and put little stock in things happening “far from home.” At the same time\, we live in an interconnected world and for many in our community “far from home” can feel close to home as well. In fact\, more polls are showing likely voters listing listing foreign policy issues among their top concerns. For this year’s Forum\, we’ve invited a diverse panel of community leaders to explore how Mainers are thinking about the intersection of foreign policy and the November election. SUMMARY:Eagle Hill Discussion Forum: Mexico and the Upcoming US Presidential Election
DESCRIPTION:Alan Riding is a Brazilian-born British journalist and writer whose career took him first to New York with Reuters\, then to Mexico for The Financial Times and The Economist. In 1978\, he joined The New York Times and\, from Mexico\, he also covered the Nicaraguan Revolution and the civil wars in El Salvador and Guatemala. In 1984\, he moved to Brazil\, his base for covering the drug and guerrilla wars in Colombia and Peru\, before returning to Europe in 1989. After five years as The New York Times’s bureau chief in Paris\, he became the newspaper’s European Cultural Correspondent until he left the paper in 2007. Among his books are Distant Neighbors: A Portrait of the Mexicans; Essential Shakespeare Handbook and Opera\, of which he is co-author; and And The Show Went On: Cultural Life in Nazi-Occupied Paris. \nFor the best part of 70 years\, the US could ignore Mexico in the knowledge that its one-party system would insure stability. Then\, in 2000\, this “perfect dictatorship” ended in an electoral defeat\, bringing instability in the form of intense drug-related violence and tidal waves of immigrants from across the world trying to reach the US through Mexico. Six years ago\, a leftist populist\, Andrés Manuel López Obrador\, became president under the banner of a new nationalist party\, known as Morena\, which he sought to model on the old PRI\, or Institutional Revolutionary Party. On October 1\, his hand-picked successor\, Claudia Sheinbaum\, took office\, pledging to continue her mentor’s controversial policies. Looking ahead\, Washington can probably ignore the erosion of democracy in Mexico\, but whoever wins the White House on November 5 will have to address the double border crisis of drugs and refugees. How President Sheinbaum responds to US pressure will determine the state of bilateral relations for the next six years. And how these and other issues such as bilateral trade are handled will unavoidably influence the outcome of next month’s and future US presidential elections. \nRegister for this discussion by emailing joerg@eaglehill.us by 10AM ET on the day of the event.

Muema and Omare will present their lecture\, Empowering Women and Girls with Disabilities: Fighting Discrimination\, and Promoting Inclusion\, on Thursday\, September 26\, from 6:30 – 8 p.m. at Hannaford Hall. Maria is a distinguished disability inclusion advocate who\, as the Founder and Executive Director of The Action Foundation (TAF)\, has devoted her career to building inclusive and resilient communities where those with disabilities can thrive. Juliet is a visually impaired sustainable human development advocate\, para-cyclist\, and inclusive women’s rights advocate. In addition to her role as a Program Officer for The Action Foundation’s Adolescent Girls and Young Women’s Empowerment Program\, Juliet brings a wealth of experience as a global para-cyclist. They represent a unique network of Israelis and Palestinians who have come to see each other as partners in the work to make changes to reduce tension\, prevent escalation\, and end the conflict. Their goal is to challenge the two communities’ assumptions for each other and promote open dialogue. Join us at Temple Beth El in Portland for this important conversation as Rav Hanan and Noor share their personal experiences before and after Oct 7th\, 2023.
